Antique Solid Silver Sewing Set in Its Original Case. France, 19th Century

An attractive sewing set consisting of four solid silver pieces, all hallmarked and original to the period. The set was made in France in the 19th century and is presented in its beautiful original case, crafted from wood with marquetry inlays. The set consists of five basic tools for cutting and sewing: a pair of scissors, a thimble, a small case for needles or pins, a wool needle, and an awl. All the pieces are exceptionally beautiful and bear hallmarks attesting to the quality and origin of the silver from which they are made.

The scissors, the case for needles or pins, and the awl are lavishly decorated with relief motifs that cover virtually the entire surface of the metal. The motifs are inspired by nature: beautiful and delicate borders featuring twisting leaves that form scrolls and waves. These motifs are closely related to the Romantic style in art, which is prone to excess and horror vacui. On the scissors, the waves and volutes shape the two pieces and create a stunning design full of charm. The awl and the needle or pin case are also decorated with the same motifs. The awl is engraved with the upper head, and the casewith its elongated, symmetrical designfeatures the motifs along the length of its two sections.

The thimble and needle have a more functional design, likely due to their small size. As mentioned, all the pieces feature hallmarks. One of these, which appears on every item, depicts the head of a wild boar. Furthermore, the wooden case in which the sewing tools are stored is very beautiful. It is made of solid walnut, with a deep chestnut color and pronounced grain, and features inlay lines of light-colored wood framing the outline of the lid. In the center of the lid, we can see a smooth, unengraved brass coat of arms. The interior of the case still retains its deep blue satin lining, which is in good condition.

This sewing set is a piece brimming with old-world charm, perfect for decorating a beautiful romantic dressing table or a corner inspired by more gallant eras.
