Antique Solid Silver Powder Compact in Art Nouveau Style. Germany, 1925

Elegant antique powder compact or cigarette case made of solid silver, from Germany and crafted in 1925. This piece is of exceptional beauty, with decoration that is fully in keeping with the Art Nouveau style popular in the early 20th century. The powder compact is very well preserved and bears a series of hallmarks attesting to the quality of the silver from which it is made. The hallmarks are stamped on the base of the piece: specifically, we can see two partially worn stamps with the number 830 between them. On the base, we also see the following hand-engraved inscription or dedication: Esther Bronnen - Julen 1925.

The powder compact is square in shape and features exquisite decoration. The main motif, rendered in relief on the lid, depicts a mythological and romantic scene in which a winged woman (probably a fairy) scatters flowers she is plucking from a wheel she holds in her arms. The woman is surrounded by three naked cherubs who play with her, clinging to her clothes and catching the flowers. It is a scene with a very special charm, full of life and romance.

Framing this scene, we can see a profusion of motifs engraved in the silver that lend it significance and depth. Among them are volutes, crowns, pinecones, and abstract decorative forms, arranged in an orderly yet asymmetrical manner. The result is a design brimming with creative freedom and harmony, which extends along the sides of the case.
