Rare Spanish solid silver medal awarded during the reign of Alfonso XIII (circa 1910). This medal is designed to hang from its owners neck; it is a well preserved and beautiful piece. It was given as an award for a Commerce Accountant and comes with a blue and turquoise cord. The cord has a small regulation piece made of solid silver too. This piece depicts Hermess Crosier: two snakes coiled up a stick crowned by a winged sun. Among other things, this symbol represents commerce: the Greek god Hermes was messenger of gods, protector of merchants. The medals front size depicts the Spanish coat of arms with the symbols of Castille, León, Cataluña and Navarra. The shield is framed by a laurel wreath and decorated with the royal crown on top. Both the medal and the rings from which it hangs are made of silver. At the back side we can see the words CONTADOR MERCANTIL (Commerce Accountant) engraved in the metal, together with two delicate ornamental details. A commerce accountant registers operations performed by companies that buy and sell real property. As stated before, the cord also bears a small silver piece in order to adjust it to the wearers neck. The symbol engraved in this piece relates the medal directly to the commerce. It is shaped like a symmetrical parchment and bears the royal crown on top too. The combination of the shiny silver pieces and the bright colors of the cord creates a gorgeous piece that is also in very good condition. This striking Spanish medal is an attractive and interesting piece, a rare item perfect to complete a great collection of antique medals. Measurements: Width: 1.3 in /3.5 cm. Height: 2.5 in / 6.5 cm.
