Watches serve a very important function, such as timekeeping, as well as being aesthetically highly valued as fashion items. The first wristwatches, with balance spring and balance wheel, were quite inaccurate in measuring the hours. Around 1670, the bristle spring was invented to control the movement of the balance wheel, which greatly improved the accuracy of the watches. The first wristwatches were made during World War I, as a means of telling the most convenient time for soldiers who had to consult a pocket watch with a chain while on campaign. Just after the end of the war, the leotine watches were converted into wristwatches, adapting the attachments to the straps. The history of this well-known brand LONGINES begins in 1832, when Auguste Agassiz enters the world of watchmaking by establishing a partnership with a watchmaker in Saint-Imier. He quickly took control of the company and renamed it Agassiz & Co. In the 1850s, Ernest Francillon, Agassiz's nephew, took over the management of the company and sought ways to improve the traditional manufacturing methods, for which he needed to buy the two adjacent parcels of land on the right bank of the Suze River in the valley of Saint-Imier, called Les Longines. By the 1870s, Francillon's chosen industrial approach was already enjoying eminent success, and the factory continued to grow unstoppably, distributing its watches all over the world. Its production, whether of pocket watches or wristwatches, represents during the first years of the century until the 1960s a notion of the watch of wide diffusion, being today one of the best known and most appreciated brands by collectors. It enjoys great popularity and prestige, both for its technical advances and for the fact that it collaborates with various prestigious brands. Such was its fame that even Louis Amadeus of Savoy wore the brand's chronometers during his attempt to conquer the North Pole in 1899.Magnificent and original watch from a prestigious brand.
