Antique Original Odhner Mechanical Calculator, Model 27. Case and Key. Sweden, 1930s-40s

Antique Original Odhner mechanical calculator model 27, with case and key, made in Sweden in the 1930s-40s. This evocative machine is an authentic piece, original from the early 20th century and coming from the factory founded by W. T. Odhner, considered the father of mechanical calculators. It has survived to our days in good condition and works really fine – it makes it possible to perform basic arithmetical operations with a fluid and soft movement, a real pleasure for anyone using it. The black enameled finish which covers the metal casing is somewhat worn in some places by the use, a logical feature if we consider the ancient age and the functional quality of this piece. At the front side we can see the embossed brand name, ORIGINAL ODHNER; at the rear we find the inscription MADE IN SWEDEN in white lettering, together with the serial number 9-154944. The solid-oak wooden plank which acts as a base for the calculator is greatly preserved, and so is the wooden case which connects to it by the original lock and key set, serviceable.

This antique Original Odhner mechanical calculator model 27, with case and key, will be the best gift for any lover of early-20th-century technology and machines.

Odhner’s Calculators History

The history of Odhner calculators actually describes the first times of all mechanical calculators. W. T. Odhner was a Swedish engineer and entrepreneur who invented his first arithmometer (or pinwheel calculator) in Russia in 1871. Odhner was repairing a Thomas arithmometer, the only mechanical calculator in production at the time, and decided to replace its heavy Leibniz cylinder by a lighter pinwheel disk. So he created the first modern calculator whose design was imitated and reproduced countless times during the 20th century. Odhner produced and sold his owns calculators, but after the Russian revolution of 1917 he moved to Sweden and opened a new factory where he manufactured his arithmometers under the ‘Original Odhner’ commercial name.
