Originally they made mechanical watches and music boxes, but in 1898 they started manufacturing phonograph cylinders and gramophones. They also recorded and distributed records, being the first Swiss record company in history. Paillard produced two high-impact gramophones: the Maestrophone Stirling, powered with hot air. And the ULTRA-portable Maestrophone, whose base was twice as small as the record to be played. Paillard innovations were highly successful, being imitated by other renowned companies such as Thorens. In 1914 they decided to start producing typewriters; they launched the Hermes model which became a real success. In 1927 they began making electric amplifiers for gramophones and radio equipment. They also founded the Bolex brand to produce cameras and cinema projectors; this brand is still active today.
