Antique Book and Card Box, ca. 1900.

This set of two domestic pieces made in the early 1900s comes from Germany and is composed of a big round metal can and a charming vintage book. The can is big in size and is made of enameled metal sheet, being in quite good condition. It is a beautiful and quality piece that preserves its original handle, hinges and lock. It comes with a vintage book written in German and dedicated to the good housewife, as the title Die tüchtige Hausfrau reads.The can is round in shape and has a great capacity. It shows off a grey enameled finish with tiny white dots that provides it with a fine finish. On the lid we can see a printed inscription in decorative lettering that reads Unser tägliches Brot gibe uns heure, meaning give us today our daily bread. This sentence belongs to the Our Father prayer and indicates that the can was probably intended to store bread in order to keep it safe from humidity. The can has solid metal hinges, handle and lock, all of them engraved by hand with volutes and embossed motives. These pieces are painted gold and the finish is mainly in good condition except for some slight worn parts. The overall finish of the can is quite well preserved though it shows small traces of rust at the edges, the base and a rust stain at the top The book, as stated before, is titled Die tüchtige Hausfrau (The skillful housewive) and is in quite good condition. The covers are dark red and bear the title and description printed in nice golden lettering. At the front cover we can see a lovely engraving depicting a woman cooking that is being watched by her daughter. The book is a compendium of lists, advice and recipes for the housekeeping, a charming text that show how domestic tasks were like in the early 1900s. The book is written in German and keeps all its pages.Those who appreciate vintage items related to everyday life will love these two pieces.
