Charming lithophanie made of thin and translucent porcelain in the 19th century. This is a German piece, highly special as is signed and numbered on the back, and which is also in very good condition. Lithophanies are decorative plates made of translucent porcelain, which were produced mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries and became highly popular, specially to make lamp shades. The optical effect they generate is quite simple: when we expose the plate to a light source (in example, a candle), the molded and etched porcelain reveals a scene in grey tones (en grisalle) which looks like an antique etching. These pieces are charming and ingenuous, and have preserved their magic through the years. This lithophanie is decorated with a family scene, which is surrounded by a smart frame decorated with classical volutes. When exposed to a light source, the plate shows a family scene in which a seated woman seems to be showing a baby to a group of children of different ages. The scene takes place in a room with a high door that opens to a garden. There is also a window t which lets the light in, creating a great realistic effect. The scene is full of antique charm and the etching is skillfully performed, revealing the work of a good artist. If we turn the lithophanie, we will discover a signature and a serial number on the back. The signature or stamp is composed of an M and the number 1819; on top of them there is a majestic crown. Under this stamp we can read the name Von Schierholz. The serial number is 21388. In essence, this striking piece is a singular, decorative and original item which will surely stimulate the interest of any lover of curious antiques. Measurements: 145 mm width x 165 mm height.
