Great machete for infantry Cuban officer, made in Germany circa 1880. This weapon boasts a very decorative design; it comes with its original leather scabbard too. It is an impressive piece, with an outstanding aesthetic beauty and in very good condition. The blade shines intensely and looks even and fine, and the grip is extremely decorative and is also wonderfully preserved. The ricasso (part of the blade located just below the cross-guard) bears an engraved inscription with the swordmakers name: WEYERSBERG HERMANOS OHLIGS SOLINGEN with the A letter, a five-pointed star and number 1. The firm Gebruder Weyersberg (Weyersberg Brothers) was founded in 1787 by Peter y Johann-Ludwing Weyersberg. Some years later Karl Berg, Peter´s brother-in-law, joined the firm. The factory passed from parents to sons until 1883, when it merged with another maker to form the Wyesberg Kirschbaum & Co. The machetes hilt has wooden grip with brass wire and running backstrap made of the same metal. The pommel is quite beautiful and is molded in the shape of a lions head. The cross has two quillons with the ends curved in opposite directions. The machetes scabbard is made of embossed leather, with polished brass drag and throat. The scabbard throat bears a beautiful decorative detail depicting a classic mask. Any lover of antique weapons will find a very special piece in this Cuban machete, full of history and elegance. Measurements: Machetes Length: 33.4 in / 85 cm. Blades Length: 27.1 in / 69.5 cm.
