Amazing antique saber for Spanish Provincial Militia Officer, forged in 1825 and in striking condition. This is an original and historic weapon with steel blade and brass hilt. The saber is really well preserved. The most attractive part of this saber is undoubtedly the hilt. It bears the PS capital letters embossed into an oval located in the center of the grip. These are the first and last letters in the word PROVINCIALES (Provincial) and indicate that the saber bearer belonged to this famous reserve army. The hilt shows a grooved surface that imitates the classic leather-and-wire design, and bears also a hand-engraved vegetal motive. The cross curves upwards and creates a lovely D-Guard composed of two quillons or branches. In the middle of the cross there is a remarkable brass detail shaped like a stylized oval. This awesome antique saber for Provincial Militia officer is part of the Spanish history, as well as a beautiful and decorative weapon. Measurements: Saber: 34.2 in / 87 cm. Blade: 29.1 in / 74 cm. History of the Spanish Provincial Militia The Spanish Provincial Militia were infantry corps created by Carlos I, composed of soldiers recruited in different parts of the country by drawing lots and bound to defend the national territory when the professional army was beyond the frontiers. Felipe II, son of Carlos I, was their main driver. In 1562 he ordered that the militia should be established all over the country. The Provincial Militia only acted as an active military corps in times of war, remaining inactive in peace time. In case of need they could take part in the war together with the official army as it happened in Italia, Africa and America. This institution was led by the Spanish nobility; during the 18th century they corrected their defects and modernized the organization, so in the early 19th century the Spanish Provincial Militia were considered the best reserve army in Europe.
