Antique Italian rapier sword (schiavona) made in Italy circa 1800 and in excellent condition. Schiavonas were made in Venice; their name comes from the Schiavoni, mercenaries from the current Macedonia, Albania and Serbia-Montenegro lands who sold their services to Venice and other Italian cities (to a lesser extent). The sword is entirely made of steel and stands out for its great-looking hilt, with revolving quillons which protect the hand from being cut. These swords were the forerunners of the foils used in fencing. The one which we can see in the images has a vegetal-inspired guard, spiral grooved grip and openwork spherical pommel. The blade is thin and straight and bears a fine medieval-inspired engraved decoration. This antique Italian rapier sword or schiavona will surely shine in a good collection of noble weapons. Dimensions: Blade Length: 37 in / 94 cm. Total Length: 43.3 in / 110 cm.
