Antique British Cavalry Sword Model 1853. Mole. England, Circa 1855

Antique British cavalry sword model 1853 made by Mole in England circa 1855. We are looking at an essential piece in the history of light weapons: this sword is half way between heavy cavalry and light cavalry models. It is the first model designed to be used by both cavalry corps, indistinctly. This model took part in different wars during the 19th century, being also used by the Confederate army in the American Civil War (who imported many swords of this model, manufactured precisely by Mole, to arm its cavalry) and the Crimean War, among others. In fact, in these last contents the English soldier wore these swords when they fought the Russian soldiers in the famous and tragic episode known as The charge of the Light Cavalry Brigade (Battle of Balaclava, 1854). The sword looks simple and powerful and remains in quite good condition. The blade bears the mark MOLE, standing for Robert Mole. He was an English sword maker descendant from a German craftsman called Hermann Moll, who migrated to London in 1690 and founded a sword business. The business was inherited by Robert Mole in 1835. His swords and machetes became very popular at the time, being acquired by the British Army and other countries. For example, they were used by the Confederate US Army. The swords hilt is simple and wavy, with a D-guard composed of branches which end at the cross-guard. The grip retains the original ray skin covering and the rivets. Just by the hilt, the blade has a mark with number 13 and a B letter. Both the sword and the scabbard are finely preserved, showing a beautiful patina created by the trace of time and the use which turns it into a very special weapon.
