Antique Spanish Gilt Silver Chalice with Saint Medallions and Paten, c. 1900

This exquisite chalice, presumably Spanish and dated around 1900, is finely crafted in 900-millesimal gilt silver. The piece is a testament to the rich religious tradition and meticulous craftsmanship of the era. The base of the chalice features three beautiful medallions. The first medallion depicts Saint Anthony of Padua holding the Child Jesus, an image filled with tenderness and devotion. The second medallion shows Saint Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary, also holding the Child Jesus and a lily, a symbol of purity. The third medallion represents the Virgin Mary in her Immaculate Conception iconography, standing on a crescent moon and surrounded by angels, an emblem of her holiness and grace.

The chalice is in very good condition, with only slight wear on the base of the cup due to use, which does not detract from the piece's beauty. The paten, also silver although without hallmarks, tested positive for silver with acid and has some minor scratches on the underside, easily removable with careful polishing. This set is complemented by a silver spoon for incense, also confirmed as silver through acid testing, and is presented in its original case, adding value and authenticity to the set.

This piece is not only an object of devotion but also a magnificent addition to any collection of religious or silver antiques. Don’t miss the opportunity to own a piece of sacred history!

History of the Chalice

The chalice is an essential symbol in Christian liturgy, used in the celebration of the Eucharist to hold the wine that becomes the blood of Christ. The tradition of using precious metal chalices dates back to antiquity, reflecting the importance and solemnity of the sacrament. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the production of gilt silver chalices was particularly prolific in Spain. These objects not only served a liturgical function but were also considered true works of art, often commissioned by parishes or donated by devout faithful. The saint medallions, like those adorning this chalice, served to remind of the intercession and protection of holy figures deeply revered in the Catholic faith. Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Joseph, and the Virgin Mary are central figures in Christian worship, each symbolizing virtues such as devotion, purity, and holiness.
