Antique Cordoban Silver Chalice. Martinez. Cordoba, Spain, 1786

This beautiful antique chalice, crafted in Córdoba in the year 1786, is a masterpiece by the renowned silversmith Mateo Martínez Moreno. Entirely made of white silver, the chalice stands out for its exquisite decoration and artisanal quality. On the base, there are gilded silver medallions: one depicts Jesus, while the others show grapes and wheat, traditional symbols of the Eucharist. This ornamentation not only embellishes the piece but also highlights its profound religious significance.

The chalice is a central component of Christian liturgy, whose form and decoration have evolved over the centuries. In the eighteenth century, the city of Córdoba stood out for its high-quality production of religious silverwork, with master craftsmen like Mateo Martínez Moreno, known for his exceptional skills and attention to detail. Chalices from this period often combined white and gilded silver, symbolizing purity and divine light.

The cup of the chalice features a gilded interior, adding a touch of luxury and solemnity in contrast to its white silver exterior. The stem of the chalice is designed with a robust central knop, providing stability and balance to the piece. Additionally, beneath one of the medallions on the base, the hallmark of the silversmith Mateo Martínez Moreno is clearly visible, confirming its authenticity and origin.

The use of decorative medallions with images of Jesus, grapes, and wheat was not very common, representing Christ’s sacrifice and the sacramental elements of the Eucharist. The silversmiths' hallmarks served as guarantees of authenticity and the quality of the metal used, acting as a distinctive mark of the artisan’s provenance and mastery.

The paten that accompanies the chalice, although bearing no visible hallmarks, is guaranteed to be silver and perfectly complements the chalice, forming a harmonious ensemble. The state of preservation of both elements is excellent, showing minimal signs of wear that only accentuate their antiquity and historical value.

This chalice is an ideal piece both for liturgical celebration and as a jewel in any religious silverware collection. Its Cordoban origin and the signature of a master silversmith like Mateo Martínez Moreno ensure an investment of high artistic and devotional value.

This chalice from 1786 not only reflects the artistic skill of its time but also the devotion and spiritual meaning infused into every detail of its creation. The accompanying silver paten, although unsigned, is an essential addition to the set, ensuring its functionality and beauty in the liturgical ritual.

Acquiring this chalice means securing a unique piece of timeless beauty and significance, perfect for use in the Church or as part of a devotional collection.
