Religious Book, 1804

Antique book published in France in the early 19th century (1804) containing the history of the life of Jesus Christ, together with 41 engravings depicting works by great masters and a fold-out with the map of Palestine. The books full title isHistoire de la Vie de Jésus-Christ Depuis Son Incarnation, Jusqua Son Ascension and it was written by Le P. de Ligny from the Society of Jesus. The text printed on the books introducing page indicates that it is Volume and shows the title and the authors name. It also says that the work is adorned with engravings on the works of the greatest masters. At the foot we can read the editors name and address, located in Paris, and of the French Typographic Society. Next we find a fold-out with an engraving of the map of Palestine, designed so the reader can locate the places where the facts narrated in the book take place. It is a big fold-out, performed in detail and very beautiful. It is in very good condition, complete and with no torn parts. The following pages contain the chapters that narrate the life of Jesus Chist, all of them with their respective engravings. Over each image we can read the school the work of art belongs to: Italian, French or Flemish. The engravings are subtle and precise, fine and elegant. Under each engraving, a biblical quote explains what is happening in the image. The printed text bear side quotes and at the end of the book there is a full index with the chapters. Last but not least, the books binding is made of fabric-lined cardboard with brown leather spine. The covers are quite worn by the trace of time, but the spine is wonderfully preserved. Two of the spines sections are black and contain the gold-plated title and volume number (I). This stunning book, illustrated with engravings depicting great works of art, will shine in the best collection of antique books. Is a very special piece for its good condition and ancient age.
