Limited edition. It is a great compendium in a spectacular large format (40 x 31 cms), of 107 pages, by AJ Hipkins, illustrated by a series of 50 full colour drawings that occupy the whole page, made by William Gibb, edited by Adam and Charles Black, Edinburgh, in 1888. This is a unique and limited edition of 1040 copies of a book in excellent conditions, dedicated to his Highness the Prince of Wales. The contents described a variety of historical instruments ranging from hunting horns and several types of harp, to the early ancestors of nowadays piano and it names some different kinds of eastern instruments. The sections of the book are blank, with the forward on flute. The plank covers are protected by water patterned paper in shades of lilac, green, blue and white. The covers are covered by brown Moroccan leather. The authors name and the title are written in golden letters. The internal document is perfectly firm and tight, due to a magnificent result of binding. The pages are largely intact, free from moisture and light conditions, but there is a trace of rust with soft brownish spots. The colours of the drawings are shown live, offering a very attractive visual aspect to the whole, in addition to its historical value and given the scarcity of copies published at the time.Dimensions: 40 cm by 31 cm, 4.5 cm thick.
