Elegant Kienzle Clock with Scribe, very well preserved. Germany, 1930s

This singular piece is a mantel clock original from the 1930s, made in Germany and in very good condition. This is a very original piece as it combines a clock and a writing desk, so it fulfills two functions in just one object. The articles design reflects clearly the decorative tastes of the times, when the art deco style was the main trend. Its balanced and modern lines are also present in famous movies such as Metropolis and in the Bauhaus designs. This school was closed by the Nazi government in the same decade. The clocks movement is signed by Kienzle with the classic brand logo (a winged wheel) accompanied by the market name. Kienzle is one of the most powerful Germany watchmakers and started in 1883, when Jakob Kienzle married into the Schlenker, owners of a watchmaker company. In the following years Kienzle got the firm grow considerable and in 1899 they were already making around 162,000 watches and clocks per annum. With the trace of time the company changed its name for Schlenker & Kienzle and afterwards it was just known as Kienzle. The design of the clocks box is interesting as its quality movement. The rear part contains the clock itself, with nice art deco-style brass handles and inlaid hyphens for the numbers. In front of it we can see the writing desk, an ample box with a hinged lid. The whole structure is made of solid wood covered by burl wood sheet, in extremely good condition and decorated with delicate geometrical- and floral-style marquetry motives. On both sides of the desk we can see the inkstands, made of wooden pieces of different colors disposed in horizontal layers.
