This item is a mantelpiece barometer, a beautiful and antique piece that has survived to our days in very good condition and working order. The barometers box is made of hand-carved wood, decorative and stylish, while the movement and the face are well preserved and in great operation. This piece is surprisingly ancient (more than 140 years old), a feature that turns it into a first-class article worthy of the best collection. It is also a very attractive item, perfect to decorate a study or living room. The white face bears the printed manufacturers name in black lettering: CHADBURN BROS. At the bottom we can also read the name of the city where the shop was located, SHEFFIELD (England). Chadburn Brothers was a prestigious firm that made optical, mathematical and philosophical instruments, founded in the first half of the XIX century. The business was located in Liverpool but had a branch in 10 Nursery Street, Sheffield. The barometers and telescopes made by Chadburn Bros. stand out because of their quality and good operation, and some can be found in history and technology museums. This particular barometer is quite remarkable because of its beautiful box. It is made from a thick solid oak wooden plank, disposed vertically on top of a molded base. The box is shaped like a little house with a top that imitates a gabled roof. It is decorated with gothic and vegetal-inspired hand-carved motives. The wood preserves its great golden color and satin finish. The circular face rests in the middle, framed by a nice golden brass ring. It is white with black symbols and has two straight hands, a black and longer one and a smaller golden one. Its ancient age and originality turn this mantelpiece barometer into a unique piece that any good collector will long to own. Measurements: Width: 9.4 in/24 cm. Height: 11.6 in/29.5 cm.
