The polarimeter is complete and preserves all its original component parts except for the inner glass tube designed to contain the chemical component. This tube is not from the same period but probably from the 1930s. The front brass disk bears an engraved inscription that reads: Franz Schmidt & Haensch, Berlin and also the serial number Nº 5382. This company manufactures instruments and material for scientific research and was founded in 1864 by the mechanic Franz Schmidt and the optician Herrmann Haensch. These entrepreneurs started the business in April, after receiving an inheritance that would let them acquire the necessary capital. The firm is still active in Berlin and is a real reference in its field. It is managed by the members of the familys fifth generation. The instrument is well preserved although the brass and iron pieces show the patina given by the trace of time and use. This provides to this article with a singular attractive and personality.
