Antique French spectroscope made by Breton Brothers, dated in the 19th century and in very good condition. This device (also known as spectrograph or spectrometer) is a scientific device used to measure the properties of light as part of a concrete section of the electromagnetic spectrum. Its role is to perform certain light analysis aiming to identify different materials. The spectroscope that we can see in the images is probably complete, but it has not been tested to guarantee a good performance. It preserves the original prism, but it slightly worn. If the owner should wish to use the instrument, he or she would have to replace it for another one in good condition. The spectrometer mounts of a top cylindrical body with a fine matt-black enameled finish. Three brass cylinders, a telescope among them, are focused towards it. The glass prism is located inside the mail central body. At the top of this piece we can see the manufacturers name, Breton Fréres, engraved by hand. The central body and the brass cylinders are supported by a black iron component part that stands on a brass vertical rod. This rod stands in a golden metal tripod. The brass remains in great condition and preserves the original transparent lacquered finish that provides the metal with a fine-looking ancient patina. On the other hand, the black-enameled component parts are finely preserved too. This fine original antique French spectrometer is a charming and interesting instrument, perfect to be exposed in a showcase with old-time scientific pieces. Measurements: Height: 17.8 in / 44.5 cm.Breton Fréres - History The medical and scientific instruments manufacturers Breton Fréres starts out in 1836, when Louis and André Breton open their first workshop in 4 Rue Servandoni, Paris. Only two years after, the company launches an electromagnetic device for therapeutic use that becomes a real success, being commonly used in the French hospitals of those days. Business keeps on growing and in 1841 Breton Fréres moves to a new double location at 9 Rue Petit Bourbon/St Sulpice. In those times the company got different awards from renowned scientific societies. The booming business does not stop: in 1848 the Breton brothers move again and establish in Rue Dauphine. The company is awarded in the National Exhibitions of 1839, 1842 and 1844, as well as in the Universal Exhibition held in London in 1851, and the one held in Paris in 1855. Between 1860 and 1880 Breton Fréres reaches its highest peak and export the most important part of its production to other places in Europe. In 1880 the company is taken over by Gerboz and eventually closes its doors in 1888.
