Impressive antique spyglass, big in size and composed of five telescopic pipes in very good condition. This is a very special piece because of its surprising size: once unfolded, the spyglass measures no less than 54.3 in (138 cm). So this is a stunning item bound to become part of a good collection or to belong to a great lover of nautical antiques. The device is composed of five pipes that can be folded into the main body, located at the end of the spyglass and containing the objective. This main element is partly lined with leather, dyed in a dark brown color and quite well preserved. This part is designed to hold the instrument with the hand. The rest of the element, just like the whole spyglass, is made of golden brass. The metal is in good condition and boasts a beautiful antique patina that provides the piece with a special charm. Spyglass is believed to have been invented in the 17th century by Jacob Methius from the Netherlands. Later the invention was used and further developed by other scientists like Thomas Harriot, Galileo and Johannes Kepler. The spyglasss pipes can be easily folded and unfolded, and the lenses and other component parts are optimally preserved too. This means that the instrument can be used to watch faraway objects, as well as a decorative item. The spyglass comes with its original accessories: the sunshade, design to be mounted in the objective in order to protect the lens from the reflections, and the golden brass dustcap. The big size and amazing condition of this striking spyglass turn it into a real museum piece, worthy of the best collector. Measurements: Width: 2.7 in / 7 cm. Height: Folded: 12.2 in / 31 cm. Unfolded: 54.3 in / 138 cm.
