Beautiful vintage spyglass scope dating from the 1940s. It is an interesting instrument manufactured by prestigious Londoner brand B.C. & CO. Ltd. B. C. stands for Broadhurst and Clarkson. The original firm was founded by Benjaming Martin in 1750, together with his son Joshua; they patented a brass tubing method. The firm was afterwards bought by different owners, and in 1783 it was eventually bought by Alexander Clarkson. Broadhurst becamehis a partner in1892 and the name of the firm was finally established. In 1908 the partners quarreled and Broadhurst started his own business under the name of Telescope House. Nevertheless, he intended to take advantage of the original brands prestige (and at the same time annoy his former mate), so he kept using the name and the initials. This is a four-draw spyglass scope. The bigger one containing the objective is covered in brown leather. The instrument is made of brass, in very good condition and with no signs of pitting. This is a 20 X scope with an objective lens which is 4 mm in diameter. Probably we are looking at a field or military scope; it comes with a leather strap to hang it from the body, something unusual in marine scopes. In one of the barrels we can see an engraved inscription: NELSON - 20X - B.C. & CO. LTD. - E.C.I., with the model of the device, the company and the scopes magnification. This beautiful optical instrument provides a neat and perfect quality of vision. The lenses are clean with no signs of coating, and the scope can be used like in the first day. Fully open, the device is 505 mm long. It is undoubtedly a lovely vintage piece which will delight any lover of technologic antiques, ideal to become part of any rooms decoration or to belong to the most complete collection. Measurements: 505 mm length (fully open) x 40 mm width.
