Stunning antique golden brass sextant in very good condition and with all its component parts in working order. The sextant, a maritime navigation tool made in Germany in the early 20th century, comes in its original wooden case and still works fine. All its component parts are original and move fluidly, turning the sextant into a fascinating item with a high decorative power. The brass this instrument is made of still preserves the original transparent lacquer so the metal shows a great look, completely rust-free. The graduated arc located at the base of the sextant bears the engraved manufacturers name and city: C. PLATH HAMBURG. The C. Plath company comes from the firm once founded by David Filby in Hamburg in 1937, where he traded in nautical books, charts and sextants that he imported from England. On the other hand, Carl Christian Plath was an instrument maker from the same city that after finishing his apprenticeship traveled over Europe until he came back to Hamburg to start a business of his own. In 1862, Plath bought Filbys company and sold his own to one of his former employees. The new company, C. Plath, focused on the manufacture of high-quality sextants, magnetic compasses, binnacles and barometers. As well as bearing the manufacturers name in the arch, we can see his logo engraved in other piece: a schematic sketch of a figure using a sextant. The structure on which the mobile parts are mounted bears a screwed mahogany wooden piece at the back, in very good condition. It also preserves the glass filters, the mirrors, the alidade and the telescope, all of them in perfect operation. The sextant comes in its original mahogany-dyed pinewood case, very well preserved and with a metal plate inside with the manufacturers name and logo. As functional as aesthetically attractive, this marine sextant is perfect to decorate the room of a lover of nautical antiques. Measurements: Width: 9.2 in / 23.5 cm. Height: 8.6 in / 22 cm.
