Fine antique octant made in the first half of the 19th century (1830-50), in very good condition and with all its original component parts and pieces. The octant is made of golden brass and evony wood and bears a bone scale. Today it can still be used to determine the height of the stars over the sea. It bears a complex set of filters, mirrors and keys that turn it into a fine decorative piece. The octant is a measuring instrument used primarily for celestial navigation. It was invented by John Hardley in 1731 and is also known as reflecting quadrant or Hadleys octant. It was mainly used by navigators in the 18th and 19th centuries to determine the location of their ships by calculating the position of the stars. This antique octant is a wonderful piece, full of personality and attractive. It is the perfect article to complete a good collection of shipping antiques. Measurements: Width: 10.63 in / 27 cm.
