Antique French Phonograph, Le Styx. France, Circa 1900

Gorgeous antique French Le Styx phonograph made circa 1900, in superb condition and good mechanical working order, although it sounds very low. Except for the horn (which has been replaced for an ancient piece) all the component parts of the phonograph are original and remain in very good condition. This means that the device fulfills perfectly its decorative duty, standing out for its fine antique design too. On the other hand, the motor has been cleaned and fine-tuned in order to guarantee an optimal performance the phonograph sounds good though its sound is very low. The wooden box that hides the motor and supports the mechanism is a very attractive piece. It is made of solid walnut wooden planks with different shades and veneers that work together to create a lovely design. The box stands on a wooden base with milled edge and a fine black-lacquered finish that creates a nice contrast with the golden wood. The whole piece preserves the original French-polish finish, perfectly restored to show off its original warm glow. The wood is also in fine condition and shows no cracks, broken or worn parts. Over the box we can see the phonographs mechanism, made up with chromed-metal component parts and in outstanding condition. The metal looks shiny, even and with no traces of rust, a very surprising feature considering that the phonograph is more than one hundred years old. The reproducer bears the embossed trade mark, LE STYX, and we can see the same brand name in an oval-shaped mark engraved in the metal base plate. The phonograph comes with an original Edison cylinder, perfect to enjoy the charming sound of this singular device.
