This striking item is a set of wooden divided scales manufactured in England by William Ford Stanley & Co. Ltd. The set of measuring instruments dates from the early 20th century, having been made around 1900. The scales are in good condition and come in their original case, a delicate mahogany box lined inside with soft blue fabric. The set is complete and no scale is missing; they can be used to work and draw just like the first day.The divided scales bear the engraved words STANLEY LONDON at their top. This inscription corresponds to the name of the company founded by English engineer and inventor William Ford Stanley in the second half of the 19th century. The company was called William Ford Stanley & Co and was located in Holborn, London. Stanley is a prestigious brand in the field of measuring and drawing material, and their products are highly appreciated by professionals. The company manufactured drawing and mathematical instruments but also made telescopes, compasses, theodolites and other surveying instruments. The company went into liquidation in 1999 after more than one century of history. The biggest piece of this set bears the following inscription engraved in the wood: STANLEYS ENGINE DIVIDED SCALE GREAT TURNSTILE HOLBORN LONDON. The words correspond to the instruments description (engine divided scale) and the address where the factory and shop was located (Great Turnstile, Holborn, London). The scale bears another engraved name: FRANK FURNIVALL, probably the first owner of this set.Except for some slight dents in some pieces, the scales are in optimal condition. The solid mahogany case where they are stored is also very well preserved, with its outside finish in good condition and the inside blue fabric almost impeccable. Its history, quality and ancient age turn this set of divided scales into a highly coveted piece for any collector. It will be the best of the gifts for a good professional of design, architecture or engineering.Measurements (Case): Width: 335 mm/13.1 in. Height: 35 mm/1.7 in.
