This beautiful surveying level from the mid-nineteenth century is a rare antiquity, and its intrinsic beauty adds something special to its special configuration. The device has two bubble caps (horizontal and vertical, with detachable mirror), a telescope and a compass with a magnifying glass. The assembly is mounted on two plates that have four screws for leveling and balancing the device. This level was manufactured between 1848 and 1950 by Thomas Davis King. On the telescope we can find the inscription 'Thos D. King, Bristol', which witnesses its authory. The level is fixed to a wooden base and is protected by a box that fits the base, all made from fine mahogany wood with dovetail joints, brass handle in a embedded plate and hooks of the same metal. Inside the lid there is a label partially covered by the wood, which shows multiple entries for the city and the manufacturer. The various devices that make up the level are in quite good condition, except minor damage. The horizontal bubble capsule, the longest, shows a measurement scale; but unfortunately it is broken and the bubble has disappeared. However, this accessory can be replaced in specialized places, and moreover there is a perfectly preserved removable mirror that complements it. The vertical bubble, shorter and placed perpendicular to the device, works perfectly. On the other hand, the telescope has a rank and pinion focus and a lens with dust cover. Two eyepieces complete the set, perfectly suited inside the box. In addition, there is a compass that also includes a standard garduated silver ring (0 to 360) and a magnifying glass to read the information. It also includes a screw to stabilize the hand. The set of level, compass and telescope, as well as accessories and original box are in excellent condition, except for small nicks and wear resulting from use and the years passing by.The metal still retains its attractive clear lacque, typical of brass scientific antiquities. Undoubtedly, this level is a perfect piece to become part of the most exclusive scientific collections. Level measurements: 350 mm long x 155 mm high.
