German polar planimeter from 1913, which comes in its original case. It is an interesting vintage surveying instrument, in good condition and working order and with all its original parts. A planimeter or platometer is a measuring instrument used to determine the area of an arbitrary two-dimensional shape. It is mainly used by topographers and there are several kinds of planimeters, though all operate in a similar way. This attractive instrument is made of brass and silvery metal, and is in good condition in we consider its old age. The planimeter works well and keeps all its original gears, screws and pieces. The delicate engraved scales are very appealing, with elegant numbers which are as neat as clear as the first day of use. The instruments serial number (2408) is engraved in the curved part of the brass arm. There is also a paper label into the case with a series of numbers needed to operate the planimeter. At the bottom of the label we can read again the serial number (Nº 2108 304) and the date of manufacturing: L. 3. 1. 1913. These pieces of information are all handwritten with an elegant calligraphy. The case that houses the planimeter is the original one. It is a longitudinal box with a black outside and a crimson velvet-lined inside. Though is somewhat worn because of the trace of time and the use of the instrument, the case still keeps the original closing hooks. Thank to this case, the apparatus has survived to our days complete and in perfect working order. This great original planimeter is intended to become part of the best collection of scientific instruments from the beginning of the 20th century.
