Fantastic Theodolite Brand Buff & Buff MFG. Co of Great Size. Boston, XIX century. This type of apparatus is also called "Transit". It is a magnificent machine made of lacquered copper, basically used to measure angles. This example attaches its original case made up of a rectangular box with an upper handle that allows in a comfortable way its transport. On the top of the case there is a small golden stick with the name of the manufacturer: Buff & Buff MFG. Co. On the walls of the inner part of the box we can see some antique papers pasted with indications of the model, as well as the instructions, something very useful if we want to make it work. The machinery sits on a cylindrical base that allows its movement. On the central disk is engraved the brand: Buff & Buff, the location of the piece: Boston, as well as the serial number: 5975. All parts are original and are in absolutely perfect aesthetic and functional condition. It has no outstanding scratches and it is a very beautiful piece aesthetically, as both the chrome and the copper reflection make it truly spectacular. Being in very good technical condition, and including instructions, it can be used from the first day. Topography is a science that studies the set of procedures to determine the relative positions of points on and below the surface of the earth. This is achieved by combining measurements according to the three elements of space: distance, elevation and direction. Topography is responsible for explaining the procedures and operations of field work, the methods of calculation or data processing, and the representation of the terrain on a plan or topographic drawing to scale. The set of operations necessary to determine the positions of points on the surface of the earth, both in plan and in height, the corresponding calculations and the representation in a plan (field work + office work) is what is called topographic survey. Within the so-called field work it is necessary to measure the angles of the surface with instruments such as the compass, the transit and the theodolite. A surveyor solves his needs with triangles, since he can divide any polygon into triangles and, from there, obtain for example the area, with the help of sines, cosines and the Pythagorean theorem. To define these triangles he uses the theodolite, since knowing only 3 data of a triangle we know everything about it (for example 2 angles and a distance, 3 distances, etc.). The transit or theodolite is a topographic instrument used to measure vertical and horizontal angles, with an accuracy of 1 minute (1' ) or 20 seconds (20" ). George Louis Buff founded the Buff & Buff Company in 1898 with his son Louis after the dissolution of his previous company, Buff & Berger, located in Boston. Buff Buff & Manufacturing Company was located at 329R Lamartine Street in Jamaica Plain until the mid-1980s. It was a thriving company dedicated to the manufacture, and also repair, of a wide variety of precision engineering instruments, in particular surveying: transits and theodolites. Fantastic and decorative piece that will certainly not leave anyone indifferent! Measurements: 36 x 33 cm. Maximum telescope size: 33 cms.
