Wonderful antique theodolite in its original wooden case, made in Spain almost 100 years ago and in amazing condition. The theodolite is signed by Manuel Recarte, a scientific-instrument Spanish manufacturer whose business was once located in Calle del Lobo (Wolf Street), Madrid. This is a fascinating instrument, in perfect working order and preserving all the charm of turno-of-the-century mechanical scientific devices. It comes in its original solid-pinewood case, also very well preserved and with the original label with the printed manufacturers name and address (Manuel Recarte Calle del Lobo, 8 Madrid) stuck inside the lid. The theodolite is composed of a cylindrical, thick and sturdy base provided with an adjustment screw. The structural pieces of this instrument are made of dark-colored matt-finished wrought iron. Though, the adjustment component parts and screws and the circular base are made of brass. The combination of these materials makes up a beautiful design. The circular base is connected to the cylindrical supporting piece; at the bottom it mounts three adjustment screws designed to level the theodolite. This piece bears a graduated scale and the manufacturers name engraved in the metal. It also bears a screwed brass compass. He base supports a cradle with the telescope, a very relevant component part. This element is located beside an angle gauge, essential to calculate the right inclination. The theodolite comes with an accessory set original from the period: a plumb with its cord, a bubble level, a screwdriver and a sleeve to protect the eyepiece. Inside, the wooden case mounts a series of pieces that make it possible to put away all the elements so they do not move when carried. The pinewood bears a lovely outside finish that imitates the mahoganys nice reddish color. It preserves the original lock and key in perfect working order. Nostalgic and functional, this antique theodolite by Manuel Recarte is a real museum piece. It is surely a treasure for any collector of antique scientific instruments.
