Sober vintage Rheinmetall calculator manufactured in Germany in the 1940-50s by Sömmerda. This imposing machine is in quite good condition and works perfectly. It lets the user perform the four basic arithmetic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This calculator works is powered by a Leibniz-wheel system and its quality turned it into a very popular design in its time. The metal casing is covered by a grey hammered enamel finish and the keys are made of grey baquelite with white and black numbers. This sober color combination turns the calculator into a functional, classy and decorative piece.Rheinmetall calculators were produced by Sömmerda, Thuringen (Germany). Based in the mechanical system developd by Göttfried Leibniz in the 17th century, they were reliable and efficient machines. The firm started producing their most successful models, Rheinmetall, Supermetall and Soemtrom in 1889, and ceased the production in the mid seventies of the 20th century. In 1986 the BWS Sömmerda merged with Kombinat Robotron to produce personal computer, but the competition from west companies was too strong and the company was closed in 1991.This amazing calculator is a witness of the companys glory days. Its design is simple and compact, and is quite easy to use. The keys and mobile component parts are all original and work perfectly. On the left side of the machine, beside the keyboard we can see the market name composing an embossed silvery logo. At the back of the calculator there is a printed inscription with a S into a triangle and two numbers: the serial one 192094 and 37/286/0000.This calculating machines solid look and its excellent working order turn it into a great piece to decorate a stylish study.
