Striking antique theodolite, big in size and more than one hundred years old. This amazing instrument is in excellent condition and was manufactured in London, England in the early 20th century (circa 1900) and preserves all its original component parts. It is in working order and is a really beautiful piece, perfect to decorate an elegant study or to shine in the best collection. The theodolite comes in its original leather-covered wooden case and is a remarkable article because of its big size: only the telescope is more than 15 inches long. The instrument is made of iron and golden brass and stands on a solid wooden base. The mobile stand located at the bottom of the instrument bears an engraved inscription in capital letters: TROUGHTON & SIMMS LONDON. This name corresponds to the manufacturing company, a firm founded in 1826 by Edward Troughton and William Simms. Troughtons father had been a leading scientific instrument maker in London and his two sons (Edward and John) followed his steps. For his part, William Simms was a talented craftsman and businessman. The company manufactured mathematical instruments and sold them all over the world. In 1922 it merged with T. Cooke & Sons and from 1963 to 1988 it became Vicker Instruments Ltd. The telescope preserves the two original bubble levels with the delicate glass flasks preserving the liquid inside. As stated before, it comes in its original leather-covered wooden case. The case shows clearly the signs of the trace of time and use: the leather looks worn and faded, but it is complete and even preserves the original shutting straps. Inside the case we find a label with the name of the Spanish store where the theodolite was repaired in 1922: Vda. de Armando Laguna de Rins Fábrica de Aparatos para las Ciencias (Widow of Armando Laguna de Rins Manufacturer of Scientific Instruments). We are looking at a real collectors piece: a great antique theodolite in amazing condition that will delight every lover of scientific antiques. Measurements: Theodolite: Width: 15.7 in / 40 cm. Height: 15.3 in / 39 cm. Case: Width: 9 in / 23 cm. Height: 25 in / 64 cm.
