Remington Rand Calculator Mod.R54 in Magnificent Condition and Working. Germany, 1950's

Striking Remington Rand Mod.R54 pinwheel calculator made in Frankfurt, Germany in the 1950s. This machine draws our attention for its amazing condition, almost mint, and excellent working order. The calculator is made of metal sheet with a hammered grey-enameled finish. It mounts chromed and iron mobile parts and red and white bakelite knows and pointers. This color combination is quite elegant and appealing, creating a very original design that is still surprisingly modern. Remington Rand is an American company that was established in 1927 after the merging of the Remington Typewriter Company with the Rand Kardex Corporation. Their most famous products were the Remington typewriter and the UNIVAC computers that were the second commercial computers made in the United States. During its first year the firm bought the Dalton Adding Machine Company, In 1949 Remington Rand designed the 409, a punched card calculator considered a predecessor of informatics system. It was introduced in 1952 and 1953 under the names of UNIVAC 60 and UNIVAC 120 respectively. The firm was also famous for their semi-authomatic pistol known as the Remington. This beautiful calculating machine is a classic pinwheel model inspired in the one developed by Odhner in the late 19th century. To the left of the digit levers we can see a big metal plate with the fine company logo: a globe with the name Remington Rand beside. At the back of the calculator we can see a metal plate attached to the case that bears the engraved model name, R54, and the machines serial number: 22355. Though Remington Rand was an American company, they had branches all over the world where their products were manufactured and commercialized. As stated in the plate, this calculator was made in Frankfurt by the German branch. Its solid and modern look and impecable condition turn this calculator into a museum piece that any lover of vintage machines will love to own.
