Thales A2 mechanical pinwheel calculator in good condition and excellent working order. This is a really charming machine that was made in Germany in the 1920s. The calculator has survived to our days quite well preserved, with all its original component parts and working fine. It works with the same pinwheel system designed by W. Odhner in the late 19th century and that was inspired by Leibniz aritmomether. The Odhner system would be later reproduced in hundreds of thousand calculators all over the 20th century. Thales was founded by Emil Schubert, a foreman of the Triumphator-Werke (a calculator manufacturer too). In 1911 he left to start his own company, Thales, together with Max Mueller. Thales calculators were quite successful though the company went through all kinds of political and economical upheavals. After World War II the two businessmen would associate again in the Thales-Werke factory of Rastatt and their calculators kept on being produced and sold until the late 1960s. This pinwheel calculator is a historic piece, a classic machine perfect to dress an elegant study or to form part of a great collection.
