Antique Original Odhner mechanical calculator made in Switzerland in 1936. This gorgeous machine is the model 11 and remains in very good condition, boasting also a fine working order. It can be used to perform multiplications, divisions, additions and subtractions with fully reliable results. The mechanism and the gears work in a fluid and soft way, so they are a real pleasure to use. Outside the calculator bears a metal-sheet casing with a fine black-enameled finish; the enamel is in great condition and looks shine and even. The same can be said about the silvery-metal mobile component parts and the golden inscriptions and numeral. This color combination turns the calculator into a very decorative item. At the top of the machine we can see an inscription with the name and city of the manufacturing company, located in Goteborg, Switzerland. At the back of the machine we can see the engraved serial number Nº 24-271547 and a small plate with the embossed name of the distributor in Bern, Switzerland. This amazing antique Odhner Original calculator model 11 will stand out in a good collection of turn-of-the-century mechanical devices.Odhners Calculators History The history of Odhner calculators actually describes the first times of all mechanical calculators. W. T. Odhner was a Swedish engineer and entrepreneur who invented his first arithmometer (or pinwheel calculator) in Rusia in 1871. Odhner was repairing a Thomas arithmometer, the only mechanical calculator in production at the time, and decided to replace its heavy Leibniz cylinder by a lighter pinwheel disk. So he created the first modern calculator whose design was imitated and reproduced countless times during the 20th century. Odhner produced and sold his owns calculators, but after the Russian revolution of 1917 he moved to Switzerland and opened a new factory where he manufactured his arithmometers under the Original Odhner commercial name.
