Steindorff Microscope in Excellent Condition and Working. Germany, 1920s

Great microscope from the early 20th century in quite good condition and working order. This scientific instrument comes from Germany and was made by Steindorff & Co., as stated by the inscription engraved at the front side of the turret. The microscope boast a classic and functional design, with black-enameled iron foot and top half composed of brass pieces and silvery metal components. The base shows the typical classic design known as bird-claw foot and its enameled finish is in great condition, shiny and soft with just a few signs of the trace of time. Steindorff & Co. was producing microscope and scientific instruments for more than one hundred years. The factory was founded in 1879 by Emil Steindorff, who started his business in Berlin. In a few years his brother Otto entered the firm and later came Julius Kaiser, who eventually became the sole owner. After living hard times during the World Wars, the company kept on producing optic material and in 1951 a branch opened in the USA to distribute the products in America. In the early 1980s Steindorf & Co became a close corporation, and eventually went bankrupt in 1986. This microscope is a good example of the quality shown by Steindorff products. The instrument mounts a three-lens revolving nosepiece with three original lenses in good condition. One of the lenses bears the name Carl Zeiss Jenna engraved in the metal; he was a famous optic material manufacturer. The other two lenses just show the magnification number. At the front side of the turret, together with the manufacturer´s name and the city (Berlin) we can see the serial number of the microscope engraved in the brass: 42677. Its beautiful and simple design together with its functionality turn this microscope into an antique piece full of elegance and personality. Measurements: Width: 6.2 in/16 cm. Height: 13.9 in/35.5 cm.
