Rare Leitz Folding Microscope for the Russian Market. Germany, 1914

Stunning foldable microscope with original case and accessories, made in the early 20th century (year 1914) by E. Leitz Wetzlar, Germany. The microscope is in good condition and is a very original piece, designed to be carried comfortably. It preserves all its component parts and works fine so it can be used to watch samples. It is a monocular microscope with black cast-iron foot and golden brass top the brass preserves the original transparent lacquer that protects and embellishes the metal. One of the iron foots front legs bears an engraved inscription that reads E. Leitz Wetzlar, together with the serial number Nº 161118. This company started in 1849 when Karl Kellner founded the Optical Institute of Wetlzar, Germay, to manufacture telescopes. Shortly after, microscopes became their starring product. In 1865 they hired a talented engineer named Ernst Leitz and soon he became a partner. In 1898 he took control of the firm and changed its name for Optical Institute of Ernst Leitz. In the following years they expanded their production and started manufacturing binoculars, projectors and cameras among other things. This delicate microscope boasts a rational and sober design. Once folded, it can be easily fitted into the storing case. Inside the case there are several compartments bound to store lenses (in their corresponding brass sleeves), eyepieces, filters and the microscopes screws. Inside the case is covered of dark red velvet, while outside it has a light-brown leather lining. This lining is well preserved and has chromed-metal reinforcements in the corners, preserving the original handle too. The case also has the original lock though it is not in working order. This astonishing antique microscope and its lovely leather-covered case make up a very interesting piece, full of beauty and charisma. Measurements: Width: 3.7 in / 9.5 cm. Height: 10.2 / 26 cm.
