Antique Gould type pocket microscope in amazing condition and with its original case. These microscope are known as pocket or field microscope as they are designed to be used during scientific expeditions. They were mainly used for botanic and/or entomological research. The microscope is made of golden brass and is wonderfully preserved: the metal keeps the original transparent lacquers and all the component parts and pieces are original. It works fine and is complete so it can still be used to view samples and specimens. In order to be used, the microscope must be assembled on its wooden case. This acts as a supporting base. The instrument comes with a complete accessory set: bulls eye lens, filters, tweezers, cleaning clothes and even sample plates. There is also a leaflet with the instructions for use, with a delicate engraving of the microscope and its accessories. On the other hand, the mahogany case is in amazing condition too: the wood looks shiny and even and boasts the wonderful reddish tone typical of this material. The hinges and metalwork are also greatly preserved. As antique as efficient, this lovely Gould-type microscope will delight all lovers of the most special scientific antiques. Cary was a prestigious maker of mathematical instruments. Gould designed the famous pocket microscope in the 1820s, probably after Carys death. Moreover, he published a booklet describing the microscope and its use which reached many editions. The instrument was designed circa 1820 and the books first edition was published in 1926. After Willam Carys death the company continued using his name as it was managed by his nephews. Eventually Gould left the company to establish another firm under the Gould & Porter commercial name.
