Wonderful antique R & J Beck binocular microscope, made in England circa 1900 and in really good condition. This microscope, made completely of brass and preserving the fine original transparent lacquered finish, is also in great working order. The prism is in optimal condition and the same can be said about the lenses; this makes it possible to enjoy an optimal and neat binocular vision. It is a real pleasure to use this microscope; together with its ancient age and great beauty, this fact turns it into a real collectors item. At the devices foot we can see the engraved inscription R & J BECK 9954 LONDON & PHILADELPHIA which includes a serial number. The microscope comes with two lenses, an eyepiece, a magnification lens to focus the light on the mirror and a dozen of antique samples. The samples are stored in a small wooden box, specifically designed for them. The oscillating mirror has a straight side and a concave side. The storing case, designed to protect and carry the microscope and the accessories, is original from the period. It is a wonderful mahogany box, sturdy and good looking. Stuck inside the cover there is a paper label with a handwritten name and address, very possibly corresponding to the microscopes former owner. Perfect as a part of a collection, as a decorative item or to watch samples, this antique R & J Beck binocular microscope is a real museum piece. Measurements: Width: 7.5 in / 19 cm. Height: 15.75 in / 40 cm.R. & J. Beck History In 1843, Richard and Joseph Beck founded the company R. & J. Beck in London. They were nephews of Joseph Jackson Lister, a renowned English optician and physicist who made important experiments with achromatic lenses. The firm made a wide range of optical instruments: microscopes, telescopes, trench periscopes, optometry lenses and camera lenses, among other. R. & J. Beck products were popular for its good quality and affordable price. One of their plate cameras was used by the famous British Army officer Thomas E. Lawrence, best known as Lawrence of Arabia. In 1880 the company started making the first true reflex camera. In 1895 R. & J. Beck became a limited partnership, and in 1947 it was listed as an exhibitor at the British Industry Fair.
