Friedrich von Hefner-Altenech, an AEG engineer, helped to create the Mignon model which would become the first step to the typewriter-juggernaut-to-be, the Olympia model. Officially, the company started to use the Olympia brand name in 1936. During World War II the original factory was bombed and moved to West Germany against the wishes of the East Germany government. Once in the West zone, the brand started to expand and reached a great success in the following years. Olympia typewriters were better manufactured than their competitors as precision German engineering was poured into each piece; the brand also used better grades of steel and chrome in their making. These features have helped significantly with the preservation of their typewriters.
