Before World War I the company was quite powerful but after the content it suffered a crisis that led the people in charge to widen their production including objects for peace. It was then when the factory started producing typewriters and pinwheel calculators. In 1933 Rheinmetall merged with A Borsig, an armament factory, and in 1938 the firm got closely related with the Nazi government when Hermann Goering acquired an important investment in it.
