Superb antique Continental typewriter, coming from Germany and made in the 1930s. The piece that we can see in the images is in good condition and fine working order, making it possible to type documents with the lovely lettering of ancient typewriters. It mounts a black-lacquered cast-iron body typical of turn-of-the-century machines, with the classic side and rear openings that make the article lighter and let us see the fascinating inner mechanism. The black lacquer is finely preserved, though showing some signs of wear that talk us about the typewriters ancient age and past history. The decals and inscriptions printed on the black background stand out strongly. At the top we can see the brand name CONTINENTAL in big golden shaded capital letters. Over the keyboard there is a printed inscription with the same brand name and a circular image of the original factory to the left. Under this image we can see the manufacturing companys name, Wanderer-Werke A.G. Chemnitz. The keyboard is German and is composed of circular black keys with chrome-plated rings. The keys are in good condition and working order. The spacebar has lost part of its black-enameled finish because of the use, but still fulfills its duty perfectly. This antique Continental typewriter is bound to stand out in a classy study or living room.Continental Typewriter - HistoryContinental typewriters were manufactured and sold by Wanderer-Werke, a German company founded in 1896 as Winklhofer & Jaenicke by J. B. Winklhofer and R. A. Jaenicke. In the beginning, the business made bicycles and machinery tools; but in the early 20th century they started to manufacture typewriters, cars and military vehicles. In 1911 the company adopted the Wanderer name; this word means rover, which was the name of the first bicycle designed by John Kemp Starley (credited as the inventor of this vehicle). The first Continental typewriter was launched in 1903; in the following decades, the company produced different models of the series. Probably the most famous one was the Klein-Continental, a functional portable model produced between 1929 and 1948.
