Rare binocular microscope made in London, England by R&J Beck. This instrument dates from 1890 and has survived to our time in excellent condition and working order. The microscope keeps all its original parts and can be used like new. It is almost completely made of brass, except for the stage, the mirror and the condensed which are made of black lacquered iron. The microscope comes in its original case, made of pinewood with walnut finish. The wood is well preserved and bears a beautiful veneer, as well as the original brass fittings: the handle, the hinges and the keyhole. This case also keeps its original key. Inside we find various accessories, an eye-piece, a lens and a wooden box with some preparations from the time the instrument was made. At the microscopes base there is an engraved inscription with the name of the company that made and launched it, and the location: R&J BECK LONDON. Under these words we can also read the serial number: 26479. R&J Beck was an English firm which succeeded another company called Smith, Beck & Beck. In 1865 the company was transferred to Beck brothers (Richard and Joseph) and from then on it adopted the initials of their names and the surname as its brand name. Beck brothers manufactured and launched a great number of quality and affordable microscopes, which became very popular. Binocular microscopes are quite rare; they are special pieces, quite sought-after by collectors especially if they are in very good working order, as in the case of this particular one. This microscope is and antique and reliable instrument, which joins its aesthetical beauty with its functionality. It is surely a wonderful acquisition for any demanding collector of scientific antiques. Measurements: 180 mm ancho x 430 mm height.
