Striking and complete English binocular microscope made in the early 1940s. This sober and attractive scientific instrument is in good condition and perfect working order, except because of one lens, that appears to be damaged. As well as the usual macrometric knob, designed to make coarse adjustments, the microscope has also a micrometric one in order to make fine adjustments when viewing the samples. The instrument is signed with the name of the manufacturer: HIGH POWER BINOCULAR W. WATSON & SONS LTD. 313 HIGH HOLBORN LONDON. This inscription is engraved in a screwed front plate and just below we can see the serial number 77113. The companys name can also be seen in the sample plate, in this case with number 22013.Wm. Watson Company was founded in London, 1837, by Willam Watson for the manufacturing of lanterns, slides and associated equipment. In 1883 Charles H. Watson joined the company and so this changed its name to W. Watsons & Sons Ltd. In those times the firm was already making cameras, optic material and scientific instruments. In 1900 the firm acquired the prestigious John Browning & Co. And kept on with its successful work until 1956, when it disappeared. This binocular microscope is a good example of the quality of the companys products. The device has a four-lens revolving nosepiece, three of which are in excellent working order. The other is slightly damaged but can be easily substituted. As well as being a functional and accurate piece, the microscope is also a beautiful decorative item that combines a black-lacquered iron body with shiny golden brass elements. Its knobs and mobile pieces operate fluidly and the device provides the same quality vision as the first day of use, except because of one of the lens. It has also some appealing details such as the silvery metal graduated scale screwed to the sample plate. This striking binocular microscope is a highly elegant and valuable historical item that will stand out in a science mans desk or shelf, or in the collection of any lover of vintage instruments.Measurements: Width: 16 cm. Height: 36 cm.
