Large Music Box, 1890

Impressive music box made in Switzerland in the late 19th century (circa 1890). This is a big size article, whose beauty is due to its careful making: it is made of solid oak wood covered by combined mahogany veneers. The box has a double comb mechanism and works well, though one of the combs tongs is missing. The article comes with a 25 centimeters metal disk for double comb that can be reproduced with the box. The outside of the piece has been carefully restored and it looks as lovely and decorative as the first day.A stated before the box is covered with mahogany leaves, with a nice golden and reddish tome and deep veneers that take the form of waves and lights. Outside the lid is decorated with a frisage design (a combination of different veneers making up a diamond design) embellished with solid wooden moldings. Inside the lid is also covered with mahogany wood and in the center we can see a charming original sepia-toned illustration depicting a group of children playing different musical instruments. The rest of the outside is also covered with mahogany wood and the inside shows the solid oak wood the piece is made of. The mechanism is in good condition, keeping all its original components except for the mentioned tong.The box also has two golden brass handles, one on each side. They are in perfect condition and boast a baroque design, with a lot of moldings engraved in the metal. The metal strip that holds the lid and the hinges are also greatly preserved. The box also keeps its original lock and key, and the lever at the bottom of the front side. The four small rounded legs that support the box are also original, and they provide the piece with lightness and attractive. This is undoubtedly a wonderful piece, very well preserved and covered by beautiful wood, that combines its elegant look with its ancient age and good working order.Measurements: Width: 470 mm.
