Beautiful Verge Fusee Pocket Watch with Calendar. Berthoud. France, Circa 1780

Beautiful verge fusee pocket watch with calendar by Berthoud, made in France circa 1780 and in good workind order. The enamel on the rear side is in excellent condition: made in full color, it depicts a musician playing the lire, accompanied by his muse. Inside the cap we can see the mark LETON, corresponding to the manufacturer and enamel-artist J. F. Valery Leton, who lived and worked in Paris in the late 18th century. The dial is white and has Breguet hands and black Roman numerals. We can also see 31 red numerals, the days of the month, which are marked by their corresponding hand. Under the rear cap we find the verge fusee movement, with the name Berthoud Paris (for the maker, Ferdinand Berthoud) engraved by hand in an elegant lettering. Berthoud was a relevant figure in the 18th century. He was a watchmaker and an inventor, became the King’s official mechanic and watchmaker and wrote articles for such important thinkers as Diderot and D’Alembert. In 1804, Berthoud was entitled Knight of the Legion of Honor by Napoleon Bonaparte. The watch comes with its original key.
