Antique Chinese Carved and Lacquered Wood Tray. Original XIX Century.

Amazing Antique Chinese tray made of hand-carved solid wood and lacquered with the traditional technique. This is an antique piece that stands out for its decorative beauty; it is an artisanal piece that has survived to our days in excellent condition. The piece dates from the 19th century and is wonderfully preserved, with no broken, missing or worn parts. The delicate traditional lacquered finish stands out on the deep carving motives: the red lacquer was applied on the previously black-lacquered surface in order to gain depth and strength. The combination of two millenary techniques (wood carving and lacquer) turns this tray into a real work of antique art. It is curiously shaped, with wavy edges that combine perfectly with the detailed carving work. The motives are performed in high relief so the small figures and elements that stand in front of the background seem to be coming out of the scene, almost becoming free-standing sculptures. The trays edge is decorated with intricate oriental decorative motives and symbols over a background of diamonds. Nevertheless, what really draws our attention in this piece is the central scene. It depicts a relaxing landscape composed of a series of traditional houses that stand on a channels shore. Between the houses we can see some twisted trees and rugged rocks, carefully carved in the wood. On the left corner there is a bridge that crosses over the channel, with two male figures dressed in the traditional way walking on it. The back of the tray is covered by the black lacquer that remains under the red finish; in its center there is a signature composed of Chinese ideograms. The edge is decorated with wonderful vegetal-inspired carvings with some lotus flowers standing out. This incredibly beautiful tray will be the starring piece of a good collection of oriental art, or in a showcase designed to exhibit the best exotic antiques. Measurements: Width: 14.7 in/37.5 cm.
