Pocket watch chain and compass set designed to be worn with the waistcoat or carried into the pocket. It is a gentlemans accessory made of nielloed silver and was manufactured in England in the 1920s-30s. It has survived to our days in quite good condition. The chain boasts a nice design, solid and wide, being originally composed of rectangular links connected by horizontal rods. The rods are trimmed by small silver balls, one at each end.At the top of the chain we can see a silver carabiner hook designed to connect the compass to the suit or the pocket watch. The hook bears a hallmark that testifies for the quality and origin of the silver. Between this piece and the chain there are three round links, also made of the same precious metal. The most attractive part of the chain, the one with the rectangular links, bears a nielloed decoration with a design of diamonds an small stars that embellish each link. It reminds us in some way of medieval-style pieces. On the other hand, the compass that hangs from this chain (and therefore constitutes its raison dêtre) is also a nice article. It is embedded into a silver piece in the shape of a six-pointed star, also with a nielloed finish that imitates crocodile leather. The compass itself is made of golden brass and has a concave glass cap. Inside the capsule we can see four red capital letters that indicate cardinal points and a blue and silvery hand that always points North. This device works perfectly and, though it clearly shows the signs of the trace of time, it still keeps all its component parts and its undeniable charm. We are looking at a curious and antique piece, highly decorative, bound to become part of the best collections of vintage fashion accessories.Measurements: Length: 17,3 cm /6.8 in. Width (star with compass): 3 cm /1.1 in.
