Fine antique Roskopf pocket watch with gold-plated metal casing, dated circa 1900. The watch is well preserved except for a tiny flaw, located at the edge of the dial (between numerals VI and VII). This detail is scarcely visible and does not interfere at all with the lovely look of the watch. The casing mounts a bronze engraved frame and lean metal rear cap. The watch works perfectly. The dial is protected by the original glass pane; it is white with black Roman numerals inside dark-amber colored circles. It also bears the printed inscription MANUEL BLASCO MORELLA. It mounts delicate golden-metal Louis XVI hands. If we lift the metal rear cap we will reach the delicate watchs movement; the component parts are carefully hand-engraved, decorated with motifs and volutes composed of tiny dots, lines and notches. The movements decoration is a really attractive feature, a special detail that enhances the aesthetic interest of this fine pocket watch. Its excellent working order and simple beauty turn this antique Roskopf pocket watch into a real collectors item. Measurements: Diameter: 55 mm.Roskopf Watches History Georges Frederic Roskopf was a Swiss pocket watch manufacturer, famous for the invention of the watch movement after his own name. In 1835 Roskopf founded his own workshop where he made pocket watches for Belgium and the USA. The movements and the casings were good quality pieces but the business did not get on and Roskopf sold it in 1850. From then on he kept on making pocket watches for other business. Some years later he created the model that gave him acknowledgement: the proletarians watch or peoples watch. It only cost 20 Swiss francs (then this was a common workers weekly salary). The watch was made of metal and had a precise and sturdy movement. This model became very popular and was also bought by aristocrats and members of the high society. Nevertheless, Roskopf could not patent his invention (as then there was no patent register in Switzerland) and many watchmakers imitated it, selling their watches under the Roskopf name with subtle variations. Today, all the watches that mount this type of movement are known as Roskopf watches.
