Large Antique Silver Chalice and Paten. 31 cm. France, 19th Century

Large antique silver chalice and paten set, 31 cm high, made in France in the 19th century and of overwhelming beauty. The chalice shows a very stylized design and an uncommon height, with non-gilt silver foot, stem and subcup and gilt silver cup. The circular foot is adorned with oval medallions containing three essential scenes of the Via Crucis: Peter’s Denial, whom we can identify for his attribute, the keys, and with the rooster at the back; Jesus with the tunic, the crosier and the crown of thorn the soldiers put on Him; and the Crucifixion. Between the medallions we can see reeds, wheat stalks and vines, classic Christian symbols, while the foot’s border is embellished with fine stylized scrolls. At the main node we see again the same Christian symbols; at the openwork subcup, three profile portraits of the Members of the Sacred Family (Jesus, Mary and Joseph) are combined with the same symbols again. Both the foot and the cup have the French silver hallmark. The paten is made of gilt silver too and is decorated with the hand-engraved monogram IHS and the symbol of the Sacred Heart. It has six hallmarks which testify for its quality and ancient age. The gilt finish is the original, somewhat worn but still in quite good condition.

For its fine look and spirituality, this big antique silver chalice and paten set will be a great companion for a priest with a taste for noble pieces.
